Empowering Marginalized Women through Training, Production, And Marketing of Biodegradable Crockeries

Introduction

In the pursuit of achieving sustainable livelihoods for marginalized women, innovative initiatives have emerged that harness both traditional wisdom and contemporary environmental consciousness. This introduction delves into a transformative endeavour centered around the production of crockeries such as tea cups, plates, and food packing containers. The raw materials used will be various parts of coconut trees. Organic waste such as rice bran, husk and straw, wheat grass, peanut shell, tamarind seed, banana material, coir, palm tree fiber, sugar cane fiber, and bamboo powder. 

The Brand Name “UMWELT” is derived from a German word, it means Environment. our innovation produces biodegradable cutlery which is designed to break down more quickly. These raw materials do not undergo any chemical processes but are naturally powdered and moulded to the desired shape based on usage and requirement. 

“UMWELT” focuses on reducing plastic usage, treating agricultural residuals, and helping farmers wholly embrace agriculture. These products are environment safe and do not make any kind of pollution.

  

Objectives 

  • provide 60 marginalized women with comprehensive training in the production of biodegradable crockeries, enabling them to create high-quality, marketable products to generate consistent income and improve their economic independence;
  • promote the use of eco-friendly materials and techniques, emphasizing the sustainable use of organic materials for crockery production;
  • create a supportive and inclusive community where marginalized women can connect, share experiences, and collaborate on creative endeavours;
  • Facilitate connections between marginalized women and potential buyers, retailers, and distributors, expanding their market reach.

Operational Areas 

  • Manos Garden at Mettupalayam, Coimbatore 

Activities 

  • Identify needy beneficiaries from among our Women Self Help Group and orient them to undertake the project activities 
  • Interactions with professionals from the universities, MSME Enterprises, and distributors to create a support system for production and marketing  
  • Purchase of necessary machinery and install the same 
  • Identify the trainer and engage him in the training program 
  • Sourcing and Collection of raw material by SHG Members 
  • Logo, Branding & Packaging Design, Initial marketing campaign 
  • Selectin of raw materials and collection or purchasing of the same 
  • Conduct training for two months about production, labelling, packing, and marketing 
  • Collaboration with government agencies and other stakeholders to promote sustainable practices and initiatives  

Project Achievements 

  • Marginalised women who are part of this project have a significant increase in their income levels through production and sales of biodegradable crockeries 
  • The project has provided a stable and sustainable source of income for the women, reducing their financial vulnerabilities and enhancing their economic independence. 
  • Participants have acquired skills in working with organic raw materials, including weaving, shaping, and designing crockery items. 
  • Ensuring the skills learned by marginalised women are transferred effectively involves in mentorship, training the trainers, or establishing community led skill sharing initiatives  
  • The project has promoted the use of sustainable and eco-friendly materials contributing to a reduction in the consumption of non-biodegradable materials
  • Women have been able to negotiate better prices for their products and explore new platforms for distribution   
  • The use of sustainable materials and eco-friendly practices aligns with long-term environmental goals

Initially the trained women from SHG are producing cups for sale. In short, they are planning to produce spoons, plates and airlock containers with lids.

Drug Awareness Among School Students: Break the Chain

  • Creating awareness among school students about drugs and their Ill effects 
  • To find the knowledge among the students about drugs and how it affects the student’s community by conducting the survey 
  • Conducting survey and orientation to the school teachers about identifying the students those having deviant behaviour 
  • Initiating counselling for the students who have been exposed to drugs through medical professionals
  • Regular monitoring through designated teachers to track those students having deviant behavior

  • Situational analysis through conducting a survey among the students and teachers about drugs 
  • Drugs Ill Effects Awareness Program for School Students 
  • Drugs Ill effects Orientation program for School Teachers 
  • Make the understanding of the Ill effects of drugs to the parents through awareness campaigns
  • Engaging students through various platforms like cultural events, sports meets, and competitions to create awareness about drugs and their Ill effects
